The town budget is our annual financial plan for funding our services and programs. The Selectboard is responsible for proposing a budget for all town functions except the cemeteries which is the purview of the Cemetery Commission. The Selectboard begins the budgeting process in late summer, and at Town Meeting voters are asked to approve the budget for the following fiscal year (July 1-June 30).
The Selectboard builds the budget based on input from the town officials and subcommittees along with other priorities. Typically, town officials and subcommittees make their budget requests at the Selectboard’s September, October, and November meetings. The Selectboard also considers requests from our local fire departments, Washington County Sheriff, and Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Local social service organizations are invited to submit funding requests which are screened by a committee and considered by voters at Town Meeting.
The Selectboard reviews budget drafts throughout the fall and typically finalizes its proposed budget in late December or early January. The FY2028 budgeting calendar is below.
