The General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Polls will be open at the Calais Town Hall, 1662 Kent Hill Road, from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Absentee Ballots
The state of Vermont has mailed ballots to all registered voters. Please contact the Town Clerk’s office (townclerk@calaisvermont.gov or 802-456-8720) if you have not yet received your ballot.

Returning Your Ballot
Please do not return your ballot by mail after Tuesday, October 29. Use one of the options below instead.
- You may return your ballot in its signed, sealed envelope at any time to the secure dropbox in the vestibule of the Town Office.
- You may return your ballot in its signed, sealed envelope to the Town Office staff during regular business hours, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
- You may bring your ballot to the polling place on November 5, 2024 and vote between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm.
Please bring your mailed ballot with you to the polls! If you do not bring your ballot, you’ll need to fill out an affidavit affirming that you will only be voting once in this election and that you have not voted any other ballots before you can be given a new ballot.
Firearms:
Please note that new state legislation prohibits firearms at all polling places, including Town Clerk Offices during early voting periods.

And remember – if a potential voter will turn 18 before the November election, they are eligible to vote in the state primary! They can register any time up to and on election day.

The Town of Calais will be holding a Special Local Election concurrent with the August 13, 2024 Vermont State Primary to fill two Selectboard seats. Both seats are 2-year terms, with one term ending Tuesday, March 4, 2025, and the other ending Tuesday, March 3, 2026. The newly elected officials’ terms in office start as soon as their oaths of office are signed.

Requesting an Early Ballot
The deadline has passed to request that your ballots be mailed to you. To vote early or to pick up your ballots in person, please visit the Calais Town Office during regular business hours, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. You may pick up ballots only for yourself. If you request a ballot for a family member not present with you, we are required to mail the ballot to the voter’s address in our voter registration records.

- You may return your ballot(s) by mail using the envelopes provided to you at the Town Office. Please mail them as soon as possible to ensure that they get to the Town Clerk before August 13.
- You may return your ballot(s) in their signed, sealed envelopes at any time to the secure dropbox in the vestibule of the Town Office.
- You may return your ballot(s) in their signed, sealed envelopes to the Town Office staff during regular business hours, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

WCUUSD School Budget Re-Vote Tuesday, May 7
The second school budget passed on May 7.
Here are the results of the combined five towns in the district:
YES: 1222
NO: 1023
Because the WCUUSD School Budget article did not pass on Town Meeting Day, the WCUUSD School Board has drafted a new proposed budget for the district for the 2024-2025 school year.
The election to vote on the new budget will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at the Calais Town Office (NOT the Town Hall) from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
- Voters are strongly encouraged to vote in person at the Town Office any time during regular office hours between now and May 7.
- Voters may pick up a ballot from the Town Office at any time during business hours between now and election day. A voter may not pick up a blank ballot from the Town Office for anyone except themself. Please contact the Town Office if you are unable to come during regular hours and we can make arrangements to get you a ballot.
- Voters who are physically unable to come to the Town Office may request that a ballot be brought to them. Two Justices of the Peace will deliver the ballot to the voter’s home and return the voted, sealed, signed ballot back to the Town Office. Please contact the Town Clerk to learn more: townclerk@calaisvermont.gov or (802) 456-8720.
- Voters may no longer request a ballot to be mailed to them. Due to the sometimes extended delivery times through the USPS, there may not be sufficient time for a ballot to be mailed from the Town Office to the voter and back before May 7.
- Voters are advised not to return a voted ballot by mail after Monday, April 29. In order to ensure that we receive your ballot in time for it to count, please return your ballot directly to the Town Office on or before the May 7 election.
- Voters may return completed, sealed ballots to the Town Office any time before the close of polls at 7:00 pm on May 7; outside of office hours, please deposit voted ballots in the secure office drop box in the Town Office vestibule.
Sample ballots, warnings, and voter information will be posted at the Adamant Co-op, the East Calais General Store, East Calais Post Office, the Maple Corner Community Store, and the Calais Town Office. Please talk to your neighbors and make sure they know about this election! Because it is a Special Election, some people may not be aware of it.
The Town Office will be closed for all business except voting on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
